[Solidarity, Path the Catholic Church Goes]

Good morning. My name is Lazzaro You Heungsik, the bishop of Diocese of Daejeon and ¡®the chairman of the Committee of Justice and Peace¡¯ under Catholic Bishop¡¯s Conference of Korea. It is my great honor to have a chance to deliver a keynote speech on this colloquium. I hope that this three-day colloquium may offer discussions and gather thoughts and prayers to facilitate good work for solidarity. Throughout this colloquium, may God fill this three-day journey with the spirit of wisdom and justice so that this colloquium may foster solidarity for the sake of true peace of people all over the world.

Korean Peninsula Calls Solidarity
While preparing for this keynote, I was thinking how many people should take courage to travel South Korea. Some people who sit here today might take a few moments to hesitate the travel to the South because the nuclear crisis.
And here we are. Korean peninsula is as if massive volcano eruption threatens the land. However, this crisis brings us together. This crisis calls us to clarify core issues of the crisis, to discuss how to resolve the issues: work and practice of solidarity. It is because the crisis that we Korean are confronting is not limited to this peninsula. The horror of potential nuclear war reminds us that our world as a whole remains in grave danger.
Due to the conflict between surrounding powerful countries, North and South Korea have been exploited by 72 years of political separation between themselves. And this conflict still influence on threatening the survival of both Koreas while constantly menaced by nuclear war.
Both the North and South are notorious candidates that have a high probability of braking warfare. My concern is whether this crisis influences development of nuclear weapons of neighboring countries of the Korean peninsula: nuclear domino effect. The domino effect would create only the impasse: destructions by nuclear weapons.
The Korean Catholic Church takes responsibility for this reality. Last August, I addressed an appeal for working on peace of the Korean peninsula(an attached article). The nuclear crisis allows me to contemplate what is the core issue of this nuclear crisis and how to solve the issue: denuclearization and solidarity.
Following the teaching of our Holy Church, the Catholic church of Korea announced that the peace and stability of Korean peninsula cannot be based on a false sense of security, on the threat of mutual destruction or simply maintaining the balance of nuclear power.
We are called upon to adopt forward-looking strategies to promote the true peace built on true justice. We are called upon to avoid short-sighted approaches to the problems surrounding the security of Korean peninsula. It is the holy task given to all of us as long as the crisis of Korea will trigger the crisis over Asia and all over the world. We call upon the nations all over the world to move beyond nuclear deterrence. We call upon the intelligence and conscientiousness to work with to map out a credible, verifiable and enforceable strategy for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
Denuclearization is the key to resolve this crisis. For discussions to solve the crisis, this is the moment to call solidarity. I will unite with Federation of Asian Bishop¡¯s conference to stop this nuclear domino effect. With the federation, the whole church, and the intellects and the conscience, I encourage people to gather to work on solidarity denuclearization in the Korean peninsula.

Solidarity, Foundational Calling of the Catholic Church
I delve into the theme of the colloquium, solidarity. The concept, solidarity shares a long history with the Catholic Church. The Greek term, katholou (¥ê¥á¥èό¥ë¥ï¥ô) refers to universal. Universality(Catholic) is one of attributes of the Catholic Church. One of the gifts of God to her is universality. She accepts and understands people in this gift of universality.
The root of solidarity in the Church is humanity and fraternity. The Catholic social teaching sees people brothers and sisters of God. In this teaching, Catholics believe that the grace and calling of God guide them to unite with their brothers and sisters for the common good: solidarity.
Principle of solidarity and of subsidiarity serves the core of the social teaching. In principle of solidarity, the common good may be achieved. When the common good is fulfilled, the principle is actualized. In principle of subsidiarity, individual freedom and growth may come actualized.
Solidarity is not pity for people suffering from their difficulties and hardships. But rather, solidarity is a powerful and prolonged consent of devotion for the common good. Solidarity is a dedication for the good for individuals and communities. ¡°We are all really responsible for us all.¡± (Catholic Social Teaching, 193) In this understanding, the principle of solidarity is referring to ¡°social charity¡± and ¡°civilization of love¡± (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1939; Catholic Social Teaching 391).
The principle of solidarity is based on an attribute of the humanity, interpersonality. Human person is basically an existence in the relationship. The world does not consist of each independent part. But rather the world exists in relationships. Technology facilitates these relationships deeper and wider. Technology makes traveling long distance easier. With the power of technology people may befriend with other people all over the world. The media reports this nuclear crisis in the Korean peninsula in a few seconds after the occurrence. Through the media the world enables to question the authority of a leader who states in his twitter, ¡°(the North) could face fire and fury like the world has never seen.¡± With technology, people enable to acknowledge that global warming, natural disasters, political instability influence every corner of the world. In this effect of technology, the world recalls the significance of solidarity. Solidarity becomes ethical norm of the human society.

Reality of Conflicts and Mass Destructions
Nevertheless, current trend does not use this technology to facilitate the common good in many ways.  This trend does not assist to take loneliness or anxiety away from those who are depressed and desperate for help. Many people are still starving to death. This trend uses the Internet propagating mass murder or terrorism in the name of religions. This trend leads technology to threaten people. Eventually, this current trend may push people to the edge of destruction of the humankind.
This trend should be stopped. Narcissism, aloofness, and insensitivity amplify this trend. In this trend, people merely focus on their own profits (expansion of black markets can be an example). Savage and vulgar selfishness and violence create massive waves to attack people. You and I should stop this trend and change it to produce positive energy for the common good.

Path Solidarity Goes
Solidarity is a powerful and prolonged dedication to devote oneself to work for the common good. The Catholic Church unites with people building the world better place. She gives mutual supports to neighboring religions, political leaders, social-organizational movements, and world citizens who work for the common good. She works with people to promote peace based on social justice. She encourages every Catholic to work for social justice. This is not some Catholics¡¯ obligation but rather duty of all Catholics.
According to the Catholic social teaching, social justice is a principle to practice solidarity. Fair trade (an obligation of individuals/communities), legal justice (an obligation of individuals/communities for the society) and fair distribution (an obligation of the society for individuals/communities) support social justice (an obligation for the society).
South Korea makes progress toward a new democratic model by Candlelight Revolution in 2016 to 2017. Not fury or instant reactions to political/social injustice make the revolution. But rather, a deepest longing for achieving the principle of ¡®rule by the law¡¯ makes the revolution possible. People united for the revolution brining their own candles with them on the street. As if small rocks construct an embankment to change the stream, small candles gathered together on the street to change the injustice. Solidarity works.
The Korean Catholic Church enlightens the Korean society as the candlelight of the revolution shines the society. With the light of the Catholic social teaching, the Church renounces roots of social injustice under the power of evil. The Church stands firm against every attempt that aggravates conflicts, stimulates people¡¯s rage, and rationalizes violence and war.
Peace in the Korean peninsula should be brought by the power of the conscience and intellects, not by a power balance of armed forces. Creating a safe and secure environment can bring peace in the peninsula. Denuclearization in the peninsula should be the first step. We should trade the expense of weapons and ammunitions with the expense creating jobs, resolving global warming issues, and promoting the common good, the true peace will come. We should ¡°beat swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks.¡± (Isa. 2:4) In this respect, we may congratulate that the good defeats the evil.

Korean Peninsula, Land of Solidarity
I call all the intellects for work for solidarity. Particularly I call you and your attentions, who gather here for the colloquium for the work. You and I should work together to discuss issues with the light of the truth and love. You and I should lead public opinions to foster the ability to discern the good and evil and to work for the common good. You and I should amplify our work through technology. We should create networks and communicate with every corner of the world through the networks. With humanity and responsibility, we unite to contribute people to establish the land of ¡°justice (rolling) on like river¡± (Amos 5:24).
Uniting with God is the human calling: solidarity with God. We are called as a co-creator of the world. We are called to cooperate with God. In this salvific economy, we may become intimate with God. Those who hear their conscience and attend to the voice of their conscience are listening to the word of God. In this way, they are practicing the will of God. Even in religious and cultural differences, humanity shares this unique and beautiful value of the conscience. They would encounter existence of God transcending the differences. Respond to the voice of the conscience and dedicate to work for the common good. We start this right here and right now. Thank you.
