“미얀마 사태를 접한 형제자매들의 아픔과 슬픔에 함께하며”

- 미얀마 사태를 접하는 한국 천주교 주교단 성명서 -

미얀마 주교회의 의장 찰스 마웅 보 추기경께서는 최근 사태에 대하여 이렇게 호소하셨습니다. “평화는 가능합니다. 평화는 유일한 길입니다. 민주주의는 그 길을 비추는 유일한 빛입니다.”
 
한국 천주교회는 최근 이웃 나라 미얀마에서 일어난 폭력과 이로 말미암은 유혈 사태에 대해 심각한 우려를 표명합니다. 단지 자유, 민주, 평화를 외쳤다는 이유로 많은 사람이 피를 흘리며 쓰러지고 있습니다. 어느 누구도 침해할 수 없는 존엄한 생명이 무참히 짓밟히고 있습니다. “차라리 날 쏘세요.” 중무장한 경찰 병력 앞에서 무릎을 꿇은 안 누 따웅 수녀의 울부짖음이 귓가에 생생하게 메아리칩니다. 시위 현장에서 벌어지는 무차별 폭력은 당장 멈춰야 합니다. 모든 폭력 사태는 “그 이전보다 훨씬 나쁜 세상을 남겨 놓습니다”(｢모든 형제들｣, 261항).
 
한국도 미얀마처럼 아픔과 고통의 시간을 겪었습니다. 평범하고 소박한 사람들의 호소와 연대가 새로운 세상을 만든다는 것을 우리는 역사를 통해 배웠습니다. 생명과 평화, 자유와 정의를 수호하는 길은 거스를 수 없는 역사의 흐름입니다. 그리고 평화를 위한 노력에는 인간의 존엄과 공동선에 대한 존중이 자리해야 합니다(｢모든 형제들｣, 232항 참조). 한국 천주교회는 십자가와 부활의 신비를 깊이 묵상하는 이 사순 시기에, 십자가의 길을 걷고 있는 미얀마 형제자매들의 이루 말할 수 없는 슬픔과 아픔을 함께 나누며 형제애로 연대합니다.
 
열린 마음으로 이루어진 대화를 통해, 미얀마 국민들이 바라는 민주적인 국가 공동체가 하루빨리 이루어지기를 간절히 기도합니다.
 
평화의 모후이신 성모님, 저희를 위하여 빌어 주소서!

Statement of the Korean Bishops on the Present Crisis in Myanmar

Sharing Lament and Pain with Brothers and Sisters
Suffering from the Crisis in Myanmar

 
H. E. Charles Maung Cardinal Bo, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar, in his message on the heels of a violent crackdown on protesters, appealed for the recent painful situation of Myanmar: “Peace is possible. Peace is the only way. Democracy is the only light to that path.”
 
The Catholic Church in Korea expresses her deepest concern about the outbreak of violence and the subsequent bloodshed in our neighboring country, Myanmar. Only because they raised their voices to call for freedom, democracy and peace, a number of people are miserably bleeding and falling down on the streets. Dignified lives that no one can deprive of are trampled. Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng knelt down on the ground in front of the heavily armed police officers and cried out; “Shoot me instead.” This outcry is loudly ringing in our ears. Indiscriminate violence in protest sites must be ceased immediately. Every violence “leaves our world worse than it was before” (Fratelli Tutti, n. 261).
 
Korea also had the painful and suffering time in the past as Myanmar is having now. We, all people, learned from history that the normal and innocent people’s appeals and solidarity could open a door to a new world. It is hard to turn back against the path towards defense for not only life and peace but also freedom and justice because it is the righteous course of the history. When we put our efforts to make way for peace, the respect for the human dignity of persons and the common good should be in the core of the endeavor (cf. Ibid, n.232). In this Lenten season to deeply mediate on the mystery of the Cross and the Resurrection, the Catholic Church in Korea expresses fraternal solidarity with brothers and sisters of Myanmar who are walking in the path of the Cross, as sharing indescribable lament and pain.
 
We ardently pray that a nation community based on democracy, which all the Myanmar people are longing for, can be established through open-minded dialogue at the earliest.  
  
O Blessed Mother Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us!
